Do you have the winter blues?
Do you have the winter blues?
It's hard not to when the weather is so gloomy outside, the comedown of Christmas is hitting hard, and the twinkly lights that made the short days much brighter are boxed up and sit waiting for this year's celebrations.
I think it’s important to get outside as much as possible in winter particularly with the shorter days, grab a bit of sunshine where possible!!
I found solace outdoors ever since my parents took me walking as a young girl.
'Exercise is important to clear the mind and walking is right up there,'
'It is such a tonic, I call it mental wealth. It really helps.'
Like Joe Wicks says 'Being Outside In Nature Is Good For Our Mental Health'
“Get some fresh air. it lifts the family & helps with our happiness”
As a photographer I love to get out and about in the local area and take photos when I can of nature and the beautiful birds and swans that I see on my travels (Having a cheeky Hot Chocolate at the delightful Hilsea Lines Cafe too !! )
These Robin photos were taken on my friend’s mobile phone and edited using lightroom presets.
Do you like to take photos in around Portsmouth?
If so, I’d love to see them if you do.

Be the Best Version of You in 2025:
5 Tips to Achieve This
As we move towards 2025, many of us are thinking about how we can become the best version of ourselves. This journey is highly personal, yet there are some universal steps that can guide you towards self-improvement and fulfillment. Here are five tips to help you achieve the best version of yourself by 2025.
1. Set Clear Goals
Having clear, well-defined goals is the first step towards becoming the best version of yourself. These goals give you direction and purpose, acting as a roadmap for your journey.
• Short-term Goals: These are achievable within a few months and can give you quick wins to keep you motivated.
• Long-term Goals: These require more time and persistence and often represent significant milestones in your personal and professional life.
Write down your goals and revisit them regularly to track your progress and make adjustments as necessary.
2. Prioritize Self-Care
Taking care of your body and mind is essential for personal growth. Self-care can come in many forms, each contributing to your overall well-being.
• Physical Health: Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and sufficient sleep are fundamental to maintaining energy and focus.
• Mental Health: Practices like meditation, journaling, and therapy can help manage stress and improve mental clarity.
Remember, self-care isn't selfish; it's necessary for maintaining your ability to be there for others as well.
3. Embrace Lifelong Learning
In the rapidly changing world we live in, the ability to learn and adapt is invaluable. Committing to lifelong learning can enhance your skills and open new opportunities.
• Educational Courses: Online platforms offer a variety of courses that can help you acquire new skills or deepen existing ones.
• Books and Articles: Reading regularly can expand your knowledge and inspire new ideas.
• Networking and Mentorship: Engaging with others in your field can provide insights and guidance that are not available through books alone.
4. Cultivate Positive Relationships
The relationships you nurture can significantly influence your journey to becoming the best version of yourself. Focus on building and maintaining positive connections.
• Supportive Friends and Family: Surround yourself with people who encourage and support your goals.
• Professional Networks: Develop relationships with mentors and colleagues who can provide guidance and opportunities for growth.
Being part of a community can provide you with a sense of belonging and purpose.
5. Practice Gratitude and Mindfulness
Incorporating gratitude and mindfulness into your daily routine can enhance your emotional and mental well-being.
• Gratitude Journals: Writing down things you're grateful for each day can shift your focus from what's lacking to what's abundant in your life.
• Mindfulness Exercises: Practices like meditation and deep breathing can help you stay present and reduce anxiety.
These practices can lead to increased happiness and a more positive outlook on life.
By setting clear goals, prioritizing self-care, embracing lifelong learning, cultivating positive relationships, and practicing gratitude and mindfulness, you can work towards becoming the best version of yourself by 2025.
✨️ Remember, this is a continuous journey, and every small step counts ✨️
Remember to always sparkle ✨️

Capturing memories with children at Christmas
Capturing memories with children at Christmas is a wonderful way to celebrate the season and create lasting gifts for loved ones. As a photographer based in Portsmouth, I can share some tips to help you make the most out of your holiday photo sessions with kids. Here are 6 top tips for photographing children at Christmas that will ensure you capture their joy and the magic of the season:
1. Plan Around Their Energy Levels
Timing is Everything: Children have different energy levels at various times of the day, so plan your photoshoot when they are at their best. For most kids, this is typically after they've had a good breakfast or nap. Avoid planning sessions right before their usual naptime or mealtime.
Keep Sessions Short: Kids tend to lose focus after about 20-30 minutes, so keep the photoshoot short and sweet to prevent frustration.
2. Create a Fun, Festive Atmosphere
Decorate the Scene: Set the stage with Christmas decorations such as twinkling lights, a Christmas tree, stockings, or even a cozy fireplace. Festive props like Santa hats, reindeer antlers, and presents can help bring the holiday spirit into the photos.
Involve the Children: Let the kids help decorate the tree or unwrap gifts. This not only makes the moment feel more natural but also gives them something to focus on, making the photos more relaxed and candid.
3. Capture Genuine Emotions
Avoid Posing Too Much: Candid shots often turn out to be the most beautiful and authentic. Let the kids play, laugh, or interact with family members. Capture their genuine reactions rather than forcing them into posed situations.
Focus on Details: Sometimes, the small moments can tell the most beautiful stories. A close-up of a child’s hands holding a present, their wide-eyed expression as they look at the Christmas lights, or the warmth of a cuddle with a loved one all make for wonderful, meaningful photos.
4. Use Natural Light Whenever Possible
Maximize Natural Light: The soft glow of natural light, especially from windows, creates a warm, festive atmosphere. Avoid harsh, direct light or overly bright artificial lights, as they can create unflattering shadows.
Golden Hour Magic: If you’re able to shoot outdoors, aim for the golden hour (the hour just after sunrise or just before sunset) for the best soft, flattering light.
5. Incorporate Christmas Traditions
Family Activities: Document special traditions like choosing your favourite Christmas Tree baking cookies, reading Christmas stories, or singing carols. These moments are unique to your family and will make your holiday photos feel extra special.
Action Shots: Don’t be afraid to get in the action! Take photos of your child jumping on the bed in excitement, running around in the snow (if you’re lucky enough for a white Christmas), or enjoying Christmas dinner with family.
6. Personalize Your Gifts
Turn Photos into Gifts: Once you’ve captured the perfect shot, consider turning your photos into personalized gifts. Custom calendars, framed prints, or even photo books make heartfelt presents for family and friends.
Gift the Experience: A photoshoot itself can be a wonderful gift. Consider gifting a voucher for a Christmas family session, creating memories that your loved ones can cherish forever.
Bonus Tip: Dress Comfortably and Festively
While festive outfits like matching Christmas jumpers or pretty dresses are lovely, it’s important that children feel comfortable in what they’re wearing. Opt for clothes that allow them to move freely and feel at ease, so their personality shines through in the photos.
By keeping these tips in mind, you can ensure that your Christmas photos with children are full of joy, warmth, and authentic memories. Not only will they make wonderful mementos for your family, but they also make fantastic gifts for friends and relatives. Happy holidays, and happy shooting!
If you are still struggling to capture your children !! ( of course in the photographic way !! ) Please do not hesitate to contact me to book a photography session today or consider buying a gift voucher for a loved one this Christmas.

6 top tips for photographing Children at Christmas
Capturing memories with children at Christmas is a wonderful way to celebrate the season and create lasting gifts for loved ones.
As a photographer based in Portsmouth, I can share some tips to help you make the most out of your holiday photo sessions with kids.
Here are 6 top tips for photographing children at Christmas that will ensure you capture their joy and the magic of the season:
Use the light
No matter how old your phone or how new your camera, the only thing you really need is light. Take a moment to see where it is coming from (usually a window) and position yourself with light behind/90 degrees to you. But watch out for your shadow!
Get In The Frame
Christmas is one of the few times we feel comfortable being photographed so make the most of it, pass the camera to a family member and get some shots of yourself with your child for once!
If you're feeling bold you could ask them to follow you around for 10 minutes just capturing, you with your child and pick the best shots later.
Get low...or high!
Shooting from ground level always adds a great perspective, especially when the floor is covered with wrapping paper, pulled crackers and tinsel Equally, grab a chair, aim down (use your wide angle if you have it) and capture the chaos from above. This is a quick/easy way to add a little comph to your photos.
Speed shooting
If you've got a toddler or older you're going to need a fast shutter speed, and here's the kicker, if you're using an automatic camera the less light there is the slower your shutter speed will go resulting in blurry photos. Solution? You got to add more light or if you're using a DSLR get that shutter speed up 200 minimum.
Shoot from the hip
Eye-contact is everything, especially for children on Christmas day, so if you have a display screen make use of it by lining up your shot then holding off the shutter for a minute until your child looks at your face not the camera Seeing how your child looks at you and not your camera is way more personal and emotive
Depth of field
It's another technical one but if you're using a DSLR try lowering your aperture to around 3.5, this can create what we call bokeh, that dreamy effect where chosen elements are in focus and others are blurred.
If you are still struggling to capture your children !! ( of course in the photographic way !! ) Please do not hesitate to contact me to book a photography session today or consider buying a gift voucher for a loved one this Christmas.

Margaret Turns 90 🍾
Another beautiful celebration I have had the pleasure of capturing.
This time, it was Margaret's 90th birthday.
🥳🎉🎂
Along with her family & friends, Margaret enjoyed celebrating this milestone with a quintessentially English afternoon tea and, of course, blowing out the candles of her prestigious birthday cake
Margaret was full of beans and told me so much about her life, like the 4 children and her many grandchildren & and great-grandchildren as well as her memorable days of being in the Army and also working at Harrods as a florist with her friend who was present to join in the celebrations.

Essential tips before your baby arrives
Preparing for the arrival of a new baby can be both exciting and overwhelming. In addition to packing your hospital bag, there are other things to consider before heading to the hospital. Here are some additional tips to keep in mind:
Plan for transportation: Make sure you have a plan for getting to the hospital when the time comes. This may involve arranging a ride with a friend or family member, or having a car service on standby.
Having a solid transportation plan in place is essential when preparing for a hospital visit. Here are some additional tips to consider when creating your transportation plan:
Research transportation options: Depending on your location, there may be several transportation options available to you. Consider researching public transportation routes or contacting local car services to compare prices and availability.
Have a backup plan: Even with careful planning, unexpected circumstances can arise. Make sure you have a backup plan in place in case your primary transportation falls through. This could involve having a second friend or family member on standby, or arranging for a different car service.
Consider parking: If you plan on driving yourself to the hospital, make sure you research the hospital’s parking options. Some hospitals may have limited parking availability or charge high fees, so it’s important to plan ahead to avoid any last-minute stress.
By taking the time to create a comprehensive transportation plan, you can ensure that your trip to the hospital is as smooth and stress-free as possible.
Prepare your home: Get your home ready for your new arrival by washing and organising baby clothes, setting up the nursery, and stocking up on essentials like diapers and wipes.
Welcoming a new baby into your home can be an exciting and overwhelming experience. To ensure that your home is fully prepared for your new arrival, here are some additional tips to consider:
Childproofing: It’s important to make sure your home is safe for your little one. Install safety gates, outlet covers, and cabinet locks to prevent accidents.
Sleeping arrangements: Decide where your baby will sleep and set up the necessary equipment such as a crib or bassinet. Make sure the sleeping area is free from any hazards and is a comfortable temperature.
Feeding supplies: Whether you plan to breastfeed or bottle-feed, make sure you have all the necessary supplies on hand. This includes bottles, breast pumps, formula, and nursing pads.
Baby gear: Consider investing in a baby carrier, stroller, and car seat to make your life easier when you’re out and about with your little one.
By taking the time to prepare your home thoroughly, you can ensure a smooth transition for both you and your new bundle of joy.
Consider a birth plan: Think about your preferences for labor and delivery, and discuss them with your healthcare provider. This may include pain management options, who will be present during delivery, and whether you want to breastfeed right away.
Having a birth plan is a great way to ensure that you have a positive and personalised childbirth experience. Here are some additional tips to consider when creating your birth plan:
Consider your preferences for the birthing environment, such as lighting, music, and whether you would like any aromatherapy options available.
Think about your preferred positions for labor and delivery, whether it be standing, squatting, or using a birthing ball.
Discuss any medical interventions you may or may not want, such as induction methods or episiotomies.
Consider your preferences for postpartum care, such as having your baby stay with you in the room or whether you would like to delay any routine procedures.
Remember, a birth plan is not set in stone and can change as your labor progresses. It is important to discuss any changes with your healthcare provider and to remain flexible throughout the birthing process.
Take a childbirth education class: Consider taking a childbirth education class to prepare for labor and delivery. These classes cover topics like breathing techniques, pain management, and what to expect during each stage of labor.
Continuation: Attending a childbirth education class can provide you with a wealth of knowledge and skills to help you feel more confident and prepared for labor and delivery. Here are some additional benefits of taking such a class:
Meet other expectant parents: Childbirth education classes are a great way to meet other parents who are going through the same experience as you. You can share your concerns, ask questions, and build a support network of people who understand what you’re going through.
Learn about medical interventions: Childbirth education classes can help you understand the various medical interventions that may be offered during labor and delivery, such as epidurals, inductions, and cesarean sections. This knowledge can help you make informed decisions about your childbirth experience.
Practice relaxation techniques: Many childbirth education classes teach relaxation techniques that can help you manage pain and reduce stress during labor. These techniques can include breathing exercises, visualisation, and massage.
Understand your options: Childbirth education classes can help you understand your options for pain management, including both medical and non-medical options. This knowledge can help you create a birth plan that reflects your preferences and values.
Overall, attending a childbirth education class can help you feel more empowered and informed as you prepare for the birth of your baby.
By taking these steps, you can feel more confident and prepared for the arrival of your new baby.
💚 Merry Christmas to you all 💚
Today on Christmas Day 2023 I am feeling so immensely proud that 13 years ago my photography journey began thanks to The News, Portsmouth after winning the One Christmas Day photography competition.
My then 7 month old son Kit was tucking into his first Christmas dinner whilst wearing a classic cracker paper hat and decided to take a well earnt snooze !!
Technically this photo isn’t everything but essentially what it epitomises is everything about Christmas plus the fact I captured a very special moment.
Ask yourself have you managed to capture some very special moments today whilst unwrapping the presents or whilst tucking into your Roast Turkey dinner ??
Do it please, it literally takes minutes here and there….
You can thank me later !!

MTV - Teen Mum UK featuring Beside The Seaside Photography
In November 2022 I was approached by a producer for Mtv Teen Mum UK asking if I would like to be involved in a new programme being filmed amd featuring Teen Mum Whitney and her baby boy from Portsmouth.
With many years of experience in my previous job role with the NHS as a teenage pregnancy outreach worker and a passion for supporting young mothers of course I said “Yes” and jumped at the opportunity.
The producer liased with me and gave me some briefing ahead of the day telling me a little about teenage Mum Whitney and her little boy.
On the day I headed over to my photography studio to set it up for the session on the day of the filming
Later Whitneys Mum arrived with baby E and her son .
Whitney followed along with the film crew.
It was exciting but awkward in places having so many people in my small and compact studio was ‘tricky’ to navigate but I did my best in the circumstances and I was so happy that Whitney was over the moon with her images.
It was also a special bonding experience for both her and her Mum whilst exploring different parenting styles.
I hope you love the images as much as I do and wish Whitney and her family the very best for the future.
