Finding Magic in the Roses: A Special Golden Hour Session in Southsea
As a lifestyle photographer, I am incredibly lucky to meet people from all walks of life. Every now and then, I have the absolute privilege of crossing paths with someone whose strength, warmth, and resilience completely blow me away.
Recently, I had the honour of gifting a complimentary family photography session to a truly wonderful mum, Lucy, and her two beautiful children. To say she was excited is an understatement—her energy and joy leading up to the session were absolutely infectious, and I couldn't wait to get behind the lens to capture this beautiful new chapter for her family.
A Little Detour to the Southsea Rose Gardens
While my business might be called Beside The Seaside Photography, tonight we traded the pebbles and waves for a stunning tapestry of colour. We met on a breathtakingly beautiful evening in the heart of Southsea, spending our time exploring the vibrant Southsea Rose Gardens and the serene Japanese Gardens.
The evening light was pure perfection—that soft, warm, golden hour glow that makes everything feel just a little bit magical. It provided the ultimate backdrop for a session that was all about celebrating love, peace, and the tight-knit bond of a beautiful family.
"Will They Play Ball?"
Like so many mums before a photo shoot, Lucy admitted to a familiar worry: “What if the kids don’t play ball?” It’s a completely natural fear! Putting your family in front of a camera can feel daunting, and children are beautifully unpredictable.
But my approach to outdoor family photography isn't about stiff poses or forced smiles. It’s about space, movement, and letting children just be.
Before long, any nerves completely melted away. The children ran through the blooms, explored the pathways, and filled the gardens with genuine, unfiltered belly laughs. Lucy was absolutely beaming, watching her children embrace the moment. Far from not playing ball, they brought the kind of pure, spontaneous energy that makes for the most breathtaking photographs.

Looking at the images from tonight, that quote couldn’t ring truer. This session wasn't just about taking pictures; it was about freezing a moment in time where this family felt completely safe, joyful, and at home in each other's presence.
